How many days are recommended to visit the Amazon

We have two seasons in the Colombian Amazon and are the determining factor to choose how many days you should visit the Amazon. Any season is good to travel to the Amazon, you will find a different landscape. Before choosing how many days to visit the Amazon, let me explain about the different seasons we have in the Amazon region.

High Water Level Season in the Amazon

From December until June we have a season of «High Water», in which the Amazon floods around 15 meters above river level. The high water begins in December, in April is the highest level and in June starts descending. This season is perfect because it is flooded, you can visit different lakes and kayak activities in the flooded jungle and still have jungle trekking in the non-flooded areas.

On Late November or early December, water is not at the highest level, but there is enough water level to visit lakes, kayaking inside the jungle will be done from February.

Flooded Jungle

Low water season in the Amazon

The low water season in the Amazon begins in late July, the water level will drop around 15 meters. In this season, we will have beaches on the bank of the Amazon River and tributaries and there are plenty of jungle trekking activities.

The driest season is late August, water will slowly begin to flood from October reaching the highest level in April.

Planning your trip to Leticia Amazonas from July until October

In the low water season in the Colombian Amazon, we highly recommend you stay a maximum of 5 days in the Amazon because staying more days will become repetitive activities. The minimum you can stay in the Amazon is 4 days, so you can do the most important activities in the Amazon region.

Example for 5 days in Leticia Amazonas, you will normally do a 3 day trip starting from the next day:

  • 2 Day – Starting the tour at 7:00 am and doing different activities in the Jungle. You will do an activity in the morning, lunch, activity in the afternoon and at night a safari.
  • 3 Day – You will do an activity in the morning, lunch, activity in the afternoon and at night a safari.
  • 4 Day – Normally you will finish the tour returning around 5 pm to Leticia, we can also recommend staying an extra night in the place you are doing the trip and returning the next day. This is optional, some guests want to have a good night before travelling or others want to do a little bit more activities.
  • 5 Day – You will have a free day if you have finished the tour a day before or you will be returning to Leticia after finishing the tour. We highly recommend you to do a short visit to Tabatinga Brazil.

3 day Jungle tour in Leticia Amazonas

The minimum number of days you can visit the Colombian Amazon is 4 days and an example for a 2-day trip + overnight.

2 day Jungle tour and overnight in Leticia Amazonas

Planning your trip to Leticia Amazonas from January until Late June

In this season, we still have enough water to access lakes, flooded areas, and do more activities. Our recommendation is a maximum of 6 days to do a 4-day trip, 5 days you can do a 3-day trip, and a minimum of 4 days on Amazon to do a 2-day trip overnight.

The difference between Low and High Water levels is that on low water you do not have access to different lakes, some activities cannot be done and tours can become repetitive (too much trekking).

We highly recommend you start the tour from the next day, you will be doing activities in the morning, also the cost will be cheaper as you don’t have to charter a boat and take public transportation.

Tour information:

Guides and translator’s payment is a full day even if they start after lunch, so you will get charge like if you start the tour at 7:00 am. Another determining factor is raining, it can delay boat departure or even not starting the tour. We highly recommend you start doing a tour from the next day you arrive.
